The name jade is used for two different materials: jadeite and nephrite. Both appear in jewelry, with a range of colors and textures. Hetian jade is associated with nephrite; a trade name alone should not be treated as proof of a particular mine or source.
Color, translucency, carving, surface finish, and condition can all affect how a piece looks. Choose the features you enjoy rather than assuming that one material is always better, more expensive, or more suitable for every design.
Ask for clear material and treatment information when it matters to your choice. Dye, filling, and other treatments are different from ordinary shaping and polishing. Appearance alone does not establish whether a piece is untreated, and a cultural motif does not certify the stone.
